What is RUF?
Well I am glad you asked.
Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) at Coastal is an on-campus
Christian fellowship group that meets weekly for large group Bible study, small
fellowship groups, one-on-one discipling, prayer, and social events. We also
meet with RUF groups from other schools for Fall, Winter and Summer
Conferences.
We are connected with Reformed University Ministries, the national campus
ministry of the Presbyterian Church in
We Teach the Bible
RUF is a campus ministry that is dedicated to the teachings of the Bible. We believe that the Bible is God’s word and is of primary importance to our faith and life. In our large group meetings, in our small groups, and in our discipleship, we make use of the Bible. As the Bible focuses on the gospel, the story of Christ, so do we. The gospel is not just for those who become Christians, but it is something that we always need to remember. We grow in our love for Jesus by growing in our understanding of how the gospel applies to us.
We are Thoughtful
We
believe in absolute truth, and we also believe the most helpful thing
we can do for people is to help them learn to recognize and discover
that truth themselves. We avoid giving a set of pat, canned answers. We
encourage thoughtful questions and place a strong emphasis on critical
thinking, learning how to interpret and understand the Bible properly,
and then applying it to all of life today.
We are a Fellowship
All
people need other people, so RUF seeks to connect people so that they
can have the fellowship and encouragement they need. RUF facilitates
opportunities for students to connect throughout the year with
retreats, get-togethers, and various activities.
We are a Part of the Church
RUF is not a church, but we are an arm of the church. RUF is the church going to the campus. The Presbyterian Church in America formed RUF and sends ministers to the campus throughout North America to help serve the whole church. RUF encourages students during their time on campus to affiliate with a local church.
We are Historically Rooted
The
"R" in RUF stands for “reformed.” That means that we as a group look
back to the wisdom of the Christians before us, and seek to stand in
the tradition of the reformers of the church. People like Martin
Luther and John Calvin who called the church to hold fast to Scripture,
to hold fast to faith in Jesus, and to always be reforming our hearts
and mind according to Scripture.
We are for the University
We are here to serve and enrich the university. This means that we are committed to the student being a student. We encourage those involved with RUF to be good students and to be involved in other clubs and activities. Our prayer is that we will produce godly workers of all kinds: scientists, doctors, lawyers, journalists, pastors, teachers, musicians and artists who use their time and talents to serve God wherever He calls them.
